Linking Marina Bay to Marina Centre, the Helix Bridge, is set to become Singapore’s next landmark. Located beside the Benjamin Sheares Bridge, alongside the vehicular Bayfront Bridge, it was officially opened on 24 April 2010 and is the world’s first curved bridge.

This 280-metre pedestrian linkway – the longest in Singapore – features a world’s first ‘double-helix’ structure, designed by an international design consortium, comprising of Australian architects Cox Group and engineers Arup, together with Singapore-based Architects 61. Inspired by the yin and yang concept in Asian culture, the architecturally unique bridge is said to bring wealth, happiness and prosperity to Marina Bay.

The Helix Bridge is an engineering feat assembled with great precision. Its curved design is created by two opposing spiral steel members, held together by a series of connecting struts, symbolising “life and continuity”, “renewal”, “everlasting abundance” and “growth”, and resembles the structure of DNA.

One of the connecting bridges will link the three waterfront gardens at Marina South, Marina East and Marina Centre, to form a continuous public waterfront loop, while also linking the Double Helix Bridge to the Marina Bay Sands®, the Singapore Flyer and Gardens by the Bay.

You can catch a panoramic view of the Singapore skyline and watch events taking place at the Bay from one of its five viewing platforms sited at strategic locations. Fritted-glass and steel glass canopies providing shade and seats are also available at resting points. View paintings and drawings by youths along this crossing, or enhance your bridge crossing experience at night with lights that illuminate the steel structure to create different moods. For a memorable experience, be sure to visit this engineering marvel situated in the heart of the city.

An innovative look at the history of the Maritime Silk Route

You may already know that Singapore is oneof the world’s busiest ports, but did you know that the recently opened Maritime Experiential Museum & Aquarium (MEMA) is the first and only museum to showcase the maritime history of Asia? Featuring over 400 rare objects, the “Maritime Experiential Museum and Aquarium at Resorts World SentosaTM“ takes you on a journey of epic voyages.

Be awed by the life-sized replica of Admiral Zheng He’s Treasure Ship (Bao Chuan) and his massive fleet – a sight to behold! The Treasure Ships were believed to sail along with 30 to 40 medium-sized ones such as horse ships, supply ships, combatships, water tankers and patrol ships – which provided all supplies requiredfor their voyages.

Visit the 8 ports of call at the SOUK where visitors will be fascinated by the sight, smell andsounds of the people and cultures and the interesting stories about these ports along the maritime trade routes. Have fun and learn more about the maritime trade, the people and cultures at the various exciting interactives which are located along the SOUK and basement of the museum.

One of the key highlights of MEMA is the “Jewel of Muscat”, a full-sized replica of a 9th-century dhow which is a gift from the Omani Government. Be awed and fascinated by how the people reconstructed the dhow and their voyage on the historic maritime route between Oman to Singapore mainly by wind power and celestial navigation. Try your hand to navigate through the seas using the “kamal”, an ancient Arab navigation tool!

Experience the wrath of the sea in the Typhoon Theatre, a 360-degree multimedia theatre that takes visitors on a perilous voyage on board a 9th-century Chinese junk. Laden with cargo, the ship runs into a storm. The sea roars, the skies darken and the ship rolls, pitches, turns and finally sinks. At the end, the ship’s passengers find themselves in the depths of the ocean, up close with the shipwreck.

As the gateway to Southeast Asia, Singapore is the choice homeport on many cruise routes. Ideally located at the heart of Southeast Asia, Singapore is a cruising hub with extended travelling routes to the region’s old world charms and exciting new world attractions.

As a passageway to the rest of the region, cruising to or from Singapore could take you to lush tropical rainforests, colourful open air markets, mystifying ancient cities and white sand beaches. Shop and dine with the family in vibrant cities like Ho Chi Minh and Kuala Lumpur, or kick back on the world-renowned beaches of Bali, Phuket, Langkawi or Ha Long Bay. To get closer to nature, see the pre-historic dragons of Komodo in Indonesia’s Komodo National Park or head to the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo. With a total of 28 UNESCO World Heritage sites in the region, including Cambodia’s architectural ruins in Angkor, Indonesia’s Borobudur temple compounds and Thailand’s historic city of Ayutthaya, no two countries in Southeast Asia offer the same experience.

Island of holy sites

Kusu Island is home to a number of important holy sites and is the place of the annual Kusu Pilgrimage. Every year, from September to November, thousands of people visit the island to pay homage for peace, good luck, health, happiness and prosperity.

Also known as Peak Island or “Tortoise Island” in Chinese, the famous Chinese temple Da Bo Gong which was built in 1923 is located here. On its hill top also stands three shrines to Malay sites, where people climb up 152 steps just to pray.

In addition to its wealth of heritage sites, Kusu Island is also a visitors’ favourite thanks to its picturesque lagoons, clean beaches and varied animal life. Hire a boat from Marine South Pier if you’ll like to visit Kusu Island, and you’ll be able to spot tortoises as well as other abundant land and sea creatures here.

The French pride themselves on a number of things, style being a key badge of pride.

For Air France, they’ve taken this aspect rather seriously, calling upon a list of illustrious designers such as Carven, Nina Ricci, Balenciaga, Louis Feraud, Christian Dior, Gres and Christian Lacroix, to help create its chic cabin crew look for the past 70 years.

This evolution of the Air France uniform is now on show at “Elegance in the Skies,” staged through to November 11 at the Alliance Française de Singapour.

The exhibition provides a glimpse into the development of the airline as well as the country’s changing times.

In the 1930s, when Air France was born, and commercial air travel was just beginning to take off, the airline saw its first cabin crew serve passengers in uniforms extracted from the personal wardrobes of former waiters of luxury hotels and transatlantic liners.
